Phil Mickelson skips this week’s BMW Championship after an impressive victory over Tiger Woods at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass.Mickelson's management company released a statement on Tuesday, Mickelson said, "This decision was not an easy one to make and in no way is meant as disrespectful to the Tour or 'sending a message' to anyone. I've talked for weeks about needing to find a balance between my game, my business affairs and my family, and now is the time for me to take some time off." However, after Mickelson’s victory in Norton, Mickelson was quoted saying, "My frustration from this past year came from asking for a couple of things in the FedEx Cup that weren't done and not really feeling all that bad now if I happen to miss an event."
Mickelson is the FEDEX Cup point’s leader followed by Steve Stricker, and Tiger Woods, and is currently the number 2 golfer in the world.
Mickelson wasn't the only player to withdraw from the BMW. British Open champion Padraig Harrington, and golfers Paul Goydos and Bernhard Langer withdrew from the event as well.
The BMW Championship starts today through Sunday and is played at the historic Cog Hill Golf and Country Club outside of Chicago. The purse is 7 million with 1.26 million going to the winner. Most of the top 70 golfers in the world along with Tiger Woods will be attending the event.
