Have you seen Manny’s latest “Being Manny”? (video)
Brainiac . 15 May, 2008 06:22:00
In the latest “Manny Being Manny” episode, the looney Red Sox outfielder makes a nice running catch, leaps on the wall to high-five a fan, and then throws out a runner at first to complete a double play! With runners at first and second and one out in the fourth inning, Baltimore Orioles first baseman Kevin Millar hit a drive to left field. Ramirez made an over-the-shoulder grab, ran up the outfield wall, gave a Boston fan with a high-five and then turned and threw the ball to Dustin Pedroia. The relay from Pedroia to Kevin Youkilis doubled up Aubrey Huff to complete the 7-4-3 double play. Truly a hilarious, clever thing by Manny, who has said ...
Webb goes for 9-0 as D'backs host Rockies
Brainiac . 15 May, 2008 02:10:17
The pitching matchup of the night Thursday in Major League Baseball is definitely in Arizona, when the NL West-leading Diamondbacks host the struggling Colorado Rockies. Arizona trots out early NL Cy Young early favorite Brandon Webb. Webb, coming off a complete-game victory, looks for his ninth win in as many starts as Arizona - which has the best record in baseball - look to complete a three-game sweep of Colorado at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks are -167 money line betting favorites (over/under: 8) on WagerWeb.com. Webb (8-0, 2.41 ERA) is the first NL pitcher to win his first eight starts since Pedro Martinez in 1997 with Montreal; Jon Garland of the 2005 White Sox is the last ...
A-Rod hoping to return May 22
Brainiac . 13 May, 2008 02:28:43
The scuffling New York Yankees enter Tuesday’s game at Tampa Bay a game under .500, in fourth place in the AL East and looking nothing like a possible playoff team. And now they won’t have their best player back for at least another week. The Bombers had hoped to get Alex Rodriguez (right quadriceps injury) back for this weekend's Subway Series against the Mets. But Rodriguez had a second MRI test on his leg on Monday, and while manager Joe Girardi said the leg was improving, it has not made as much progress as the Yankees hoped. Rodriguez will continue to take ground balls and batting practice at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa, as he did on ...
Jim Edmonds to the Cubs?
Brainiac . 12 May, 2008 07:16:58
It’s possible, what with Felix Pie’s struggles. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Cubs could investigate signing Edmonds, who was released by the Padres after hitting .178 and struggling in the field. In fact, the Cubs are exploring the possibility, according to sources. Manager Lou Piniella long has desired another left-handed bat to go with Kosuke Fukudome. Pie has been unreliable. Signing Edmonds could allow the Cubs to send Pie to Triple-A Iowa for steady work. Asked about the possibility of a left-handed bat being added, Piniella said, "We'll just have to see what happens." Most Cubs fans hate Edmonds, 37, from his days at archrival St. Louis, and the guy looks done. But it’s ...
Musical closers in NL Central
Brainiac . 12 May, 2008 00:22:00
This past weekend wasn’t a good one for couple of National League Central closers. The Cardinals’ Jason Isringhausen and the Brewers’ Eric Gagne both lost their jobs over the weekend, and those two new-look bullpens will see each other again Monday night in the finale of a four-game series in Milwaukee - the Cardinals opened as -125 money line betting favorites (over/under: 8.5) on WagerWeb.com. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa seemed to hint that Isringhausen’s demotion was only temporary. "He's not hurting, he's just pressing and lost his confidence," La Russa said. "You go back to the drawing board a little bit on his delivery so he can locate better, and you give him some ...
Indians vs. Yankees preview
Brainiac . 06 May, 2008 02:38:52
The best pitching matchup heading into Tuesday’s night baseball action would appear to be in the Bronx, where Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona opposes New York’s Andy Pettitte, with the Yankees -135 money line betting favorites (over/under: 8.5) on WagerWeb.com. The Indians have lost five of their last seven since a season-high five-game winning streak, but hope Carmona (3-1, 2.60) can change that. The right-hander gave up two runs - one earned - and eight hits over 6 2-3 innings on Tuesday, but didn't factor in a 7-2 loss to Seattle. Carmona will face the Yankees for the first time since the Indians' 2-1, 11-inning victory in a division series game on Oct. 5. (That was the game in ...
Phillies vs. Diamondbacks preview
Brainiac . 06 May, 2008 02:14:19
A battle of division leaders and 2007 playoff teams headlines Tuesday night’s baseball action as the streaking Philadelphia Phillies visit Arizona, with the Diamondbacks -148 money line betting favorites (over/under: 10 runs) on WagerWeb.com. The Phillies will look to make it five wins in six games, 12 of 16 and two straight in Arizona on Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, who are trying to avoid losing three straight for the first time this season. Randy Johnson (1-1, 4.79 ERA) takes the mound for Arizona. The Big Unit is coming off his worst start of the season. He allowed six runs in four innings to the Astros on Wednesday. He did have one of his better starts of last ...
Jacque Jones experiment over in Motown
Brainiac . 05 May, 2008 09:32:19
In order to make Gary Sheffield happy (he wasn’t just being a DH), Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced he would move Sheffield to left field. That left no room for struggling Jacque Jones, who was designated for assignment. Jones hit just .165 with a homer and five RBIs in 24 games for the Tigers, who acquired him during a busy offseason from the Chicago Cubs. He is in the final season of the three-year deal he signed with the Cubs for $16 million. The team also called up outfielder Matt Joyce from Triple-A Toledo. Joyce played impressively in big-league camp this spring and batted .299 with five home runs and 21 RBIs at Toledo. He has never played ...
Red Sox-Yankees argument leads to murder charge
Brainiac . 05 May, 2008 07:16:00
A woman accused of running down a man in her car after a Red Sox-Yankees argument in a Nashua, N.H., bar never hit her brakes as she accelerated toward the small group he was in, a prosecutor said Monday. "She never braked, and she accelerated at a high speed for about 200 feet. She went directly at this group of people," prosecutor Susan Morrell said of Ivonne Hernandez, who is charged with reckless second-degree murder in the death early Friday of Matthew Beaudoin, 29. Beaudoin was with a group of people that argued with Hernandez over the Yankees and Red Sox in the Nashua City Hall parking lot, said Morrell. After the argument, Hernandez got in her ...
Ozzie Guillen goes (bleeping) off!
Brainiac . 05 May, 2008 05:01:12
With his White Sox on a five-game losing streak, manager Ozzie Guillen apparently felt it was time for one of his patented, profanity-laced tirades. "Right now everyone in Chicago is making lineups — 'Call up this guy, call up that guy,' " Guillen said Sunday morning. "If we had 50 people allowed on the roster, we could do that. That's what ticks me off about Chicago fans and Chicago media: They forget pretty quickly. A couple of days ago we were the [bleeping] best [stuff] in town. Now we're [bleep]." “We won (the World Series) a couple years ago, and we’re horse[bleep],” Guillen said. “The Cubs haven’t won in [100] years, and they’re the [bleeping] best. [Bleep] ...
