What happened: Former WCW wrestler Chase Tatum was found dead late Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.

Why you might care: Tatum died of an apparent accidental drug overdose, his father said

Tatum, 34, was recovering from back surgery 10 days earlier to repair a degenerative disc. His father, Roy Tatum of Kennesaw, said his son had been battling a painkiller dependence for years but had made plans to enter a rehabilitation facility in Miami.

Tatum attended West Georgia University where he played defensive end for the football team. He started bodybuilding at an early age and won the ‘Mr. Georgia’ bodybuilding competition at 19. After college, Tatum worked as a personal trainer. One of his clients encouraged him to audition for the WCW and his wrestling career began in 1999. He lasted less than three years and left with back problems and no health insurance.

A toxicology report has been ordered by the Fulton County Medical Examiner, which will take anywhere from six to eight weeks.

This is a too-familiar scene lately: a wrestler dying of an overdose. Obviously Tatum’s father is grieving, but he has no way of knowing if this was accidental or not. Obviously steroids may have played a role into this.
