Another former top open-wheel driver is heading to NASCAR.
Patrick Carpentier, who has five career wins in the Champ Car Series, was finalizing a deal to drive the No. 10 Dodge for Gillett Evernham Motorsports in NASCAR next season.
Carpentier will replace Scott Riggs, who is leaving to drive for Haas CNC Racing next season. He'll step into a team that has new majority ownership in George Gillett Jr., who also owns the Montreal Canadiens and is co-owner of the English Premier League club Liverpool.
He becomes the latest open-wheel driver to jump to NASCAR, and will join a Dodge camp that already has Juan Pablo Montoya and Dario Franchitti in Avengers for next season. Former Formula One world champion Jacques Villeneuve will drive a Toyota next season.
The 36-year-old Carpentier, a native of Joliette, Que., has been a hot commodity in NASCAR's top circuit after impressive finishes in the inaugural Busch Series race at Montreal this year, which he followed up with an impressive debut in a Cup car at Watkins Glen.
Carpentier has been without a competitive ride this year after Eddie Cheever scaled back his IRL team to one car for 2006.
