Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell will be sidelined seven to eight weeks as a result of injuries sustained Sunday when he was checked into the board by Washingtons Alex Ovechkin, the team said Tuesday.

“Brian Campbell suffered a clavicle fracture and a rib fracture on Sunday,” team physician Dr.

Michael Terry said in a statement.

“He will likely avoid surgery and we anticipate a full recovery.

He should be ready to play in approximately seven to eight weeks.”

Meanwhile, Ovechkin issued an apology for the hit that earned him a two-game suspension.

“I am very sorry that Brian was injured and I hope he is able to return to his team soon,” Ovechkin said in the statement.

“NHL hockey is a physical game.

We all play hard every time we are on the ice and have battles each shift in every game we play so we can do our jobs and win.

As players we must accept responsibility for our actions and I am no different but I did not intend to injure Brian and that is why I was disappointed with the NHLs decision yesterday.

Every time I have the honor to play for my team, I will continue to do what I have done since I was taught to play.

I will play hard, play with passion and play with respect for my teammates, opponents and fans.

I look forward to returning to my team and doing everything I can to be the best player I can be.”

Canadiens vs. Rangers
NHL Hockey Betting Preview

The Montreal Canadiens are surging and trying to lock up a playoff spot, while the New York Rangers have turned their fortunes around, at least for now as they attempt to gain a playoff spot while being on the outside looking in. One teams fortunes will be reversed as the two members of the Original Six meet up in New York on Tuesday night.

LAST 10
Canadiens 7-3-0, Rangers 5-3-2

TEAM SCOPE
Canadiens: Montreal Canadiens split its first two games following the Olympic break and at the time, they were floundering below the playoff teams. But since then they have won five straight games, they are nearing moving into the sixth seed, as they are currently tied with the Philadelphia Flyers for that spot.

Rangers: New York finally ended its four-game losing streak after winning their first game back from the Olympics. Their recent slide has been costly, but their two-game winning streak has put them back on the cusp of retaking a playoff spot, now just a single-point behind the sinking Boston Bruins.

WHO’S HOT
Sean Avery found the back of the net twice for the New York Rangers. In his second tour of duty in the Big Apple, Avery has been more known for his penalty minutes than his goals. He also notched two penalty minutes in New York’s win. Sergei Kostitsyn scored a pair of goals in Montreal’s win over Boston, giving him four points in his last two games, three of those goals.

Kevin Millwood threw 88 pitches (56 strikes) in his five innings of work against minor league hitters in todays intrasquad game.

He struck out seven, walked two and gave up three runs in his final inning of work, but looked much sharper than in his two exhibition outings.

“It felt good, Millwood said.

“Its nice to be able to go out and work on things and not worry about keeping guys (teammates) out there forever.

Everything got better again today.”

Pitching coach Rick Kranitz agreed.

“I liked what I saw, said Kranitz, who stayed behind to watch Millwood and Jim Johnson before rushing to Fort Myers for the Grapefruit League game against the Twins.

“Every time he goes out there, he closes the gap to where he needs to be.

He got a lot out of today.

Were starting to see some consistency in his release point and good life on his pitches.

Its coming around.”

The Lions need a third quarterback on their roster and, more important, a dependable backup for Matthew Stafford.

Signing a veteran to compete with Drew Stanton for that role would seem to make the most sense, but coach Jim Schwartz said drafting a quarterback is not out of the question.

“You can take that first-round draft pick off, but maybe at some time in the draft a quarterback makes sense,” Schwartz told reporters Friday.

“Thats happened a bunch of different times.

Youre sitting saying, Hey, look, this makes sense right here. I dont think weve gone into (the off-season) saying, This is exactly how were going to fill that. What you do is you just weigh every option that comes up.

When one makes sense, you pull the trigger on it and right now were still weighing our options.”

What is the outlook for Ryan Whitney down the stretch?

Whitney is doing his best to put a positive spin on bad situation, but the veteran defenseman was one of the biggest losers from a Fantasy standpoint at this years trade deadline.

Aside from the fact the Oilers are terrible in all facets — including offense (2.43 goals per game) — another concern is Whitneys health.

He said his surgically-repaired left foot — which cost him 33 games to start the 2008-09 season — is fine, but he added he is battling an issue with his right foot.

He said its nothing too serious where it will be a major factor, but we beg to differ.

Whitney has totaled four goals, 29 points and a minus-6 rating in 67 games between the Ducks and Oilers this season.

He has no goals and one assist in five games since joining Edmonton.

These numbers are a far cry from the 40-50-point threat Whitney was as late as the 2007-08 season.

His poor offensive production and miscues on defense is why Anaheim put him on the trade block — a little more than a year after Pittsburgh traded the 27-year-old blueliner to the Ducks.

The injury issues are a big reason why Whitney has had such a tragic turn in his career.

Not only does he need to fight a physical battle but a mental one as well.

He is looking to end the year on a high note and build off that moving forward.

Its good Whitney is trying to psyche himself up, but being mentally prepared is only half the battle.

That makes eighth players cut from the big-league roster in less than 24 hours.

Rosa, 25, was once regarded as one of the organizations top pitching prospects, but his ERA ballooned last season to 4.56 in 43 games at Omaha.

He made just two spring appearances and allowed two runs on one hit and three walks in two innings.

The Royals began their personnel shuffle just prior to Mondays 9-1 victory over the White Sox in Glendale, Ariz., by optioning left-handed pitcher Noel Arguelles to Class A Wilmington and infielder Jeff Bianchi to Class AA Northwest Arkansas.

NBA Basketball Betting Preview

The Atlanta Hawks have taken a one-game lead over the Boston Celtics for the third-seed in the Eastern Conference via their current two-game winning streak and a recent loss by Boston. Atlanta is looking for instant wins against some of the poorer teams in the league during their current stretch with continues with a trip to face the NBA’s worst team, the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday.

LAST 10
Hawks 7-3, Nets 2-8

TEAM SCOPE
Hawks: Atlanta has beaten Washington and Detroit to grab a winning streak. Next up are stops in New Jersey and Toronto, who can not seem to buy a victory lately. From that point on it gets tougher for the Atlanta Hawks as they will head home for games with Charlotte and San Antonio and then hit the road again for a trip to Milwaukee and back home for Orlando.

Nets: Their most recent and current losing streak stands at four games after losing 116-108 to the Houston Rockets on Saturday. It is getting down to brass tax for New Jersey. They have seven wins with 14 games remaining. It took them 66 games to notch seven wins and they now need three wins in their final 14 games to avoid either tying or breaking the record for futility set by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 70’s when they posted just nine wins.

WHO’S HOT
Joe Johnson scored 26 points for the Hawks in their win over Detroit on Saturday while Brook Lopez secured a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the Nets loss to the Rockets.
