Indy car racing returns to the Brickyard on May 27, as the 91st Indianapolis 500 pushes NASCAR out of the auto racing spotlight for at least one day.

Last year Sam Hornish Jr. chugged from the jug of milk after narrowly defeating rookie driver Marco Andretti at the finish line. Hornish Jr. zipped past Andretti on the final lap and ended up winning by only 0.0635 seconds, which was the second-closest win in Indy 500 history.

It looked like 2005 Indy 500 champ Dan Wheldon was going to capture his second straight win at Indy last year before a punctured tire dropped him out of the running late in the race. Wheldon would go on to finish fourth despite leading 148 of 200 laps. Wheldon and Hornish Jr. are both listed in this year’s Indy field and should battle for top spot as long as their cars hold together.

Last year Danica Patrick drew most of the attention at Indy, but she may have to share some of it this year because she won’t be the only woman in the field. After leaving Indy car racing to try her hand at NASCAR, Sarah Fisher returned to Indy car racing fulltime this season and will be challenging Patrick for top female finish at Indy. Patrick came in eighth last year, unable to top her fourth-place finish from a year earlier. Fisher has raced in the Indy 500 five times before with her best finish being a ninth place in 2002.

Aside from Wheldon and Hornish Jr., other former Indy 500 winners already committed to this year’s race include two-time winner Helio Castroneves (2001 & 2002), Buddy Rice (2004) and Buddy Lazier (1996).

Indy car veteran Michael Andretti is scheduled to make another run at the ever-elusive Indy 500 victory. Andretti has raced in the Indy 500 15 times, but still hasn’t been able to claim the checkered flag. Last year Andretti finished behind his son Marco Andretti in third place, meaning his best-ever Indy finish remains the second place he picked up way back in 1991.
