Two Horizon league teams renew rivalries at the Hinkle Fieldhouse when Wisconsin-Milwaukee heads to Indianapolis to take on the 17th-ranked and one-loss Butler Bulldogs.
WI-Milwaukee (12-7, 7-2) has turned their season around recently since the beginning of league play. In their last time out they lost a non-conference road game to Valparaiso 63-51. The loss snapped a three game winning streak. Still with the loss to Valpo, the Panthers have won seven of their last 10 games.
Instrumental in WI-Milwaukees success this season has been Avery Smith. The guard leads the team with 13 points, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. But in their loss Thursday night, their leader was nowhere to be found.
Smith was one of three starters, along with Anthony Hill and Ricky Franklin, to fail to get on the scoreboard. In fact the trio combined for zero points in 54 minutes. Tony Boyle was the only starter in double figures with 15, the other starter Tony Meier had 6 points. James Eayrs and Deonte Roberts came off the bench and each scored in double-digits.
Butler (17-1, 8-0) also have gotten off to a good start in conference play, undefeated through eight games. The Bulldogs lone loss this season was at Ohio State back on December 13th. Since then they have won nine straight.
In their last contest Thursday night, the Bulldogs defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay 68-59. Contrary to their opponents for Saturday, Butler got a lot of production from their starters, with three of the five in double digits and another, Willie Veasley, just missing out with nine.
Matt Howard led the scores with 15, while Gordon Hayward contributed 14. Howard leads the team with 13.9 points per game, 6.7 rebounds. He also leads the team at 52.1 percent shooting from the field.
Butler has won four straight and five out of the last six games.
