Perhaps Notre Dame has been looking ahead to playing USC. The Fighting Irish have not won in the series since 2001 and would love nothing better than to save their season with a victory over their rivals from the west coast.
Something would have to explain Notre Dame’s lackluster showing the last third of the season in which they have lost four of their last six and had to survive a late rally from Navy to not lose five out of the six. Last week the Fighting Irish (6-5) suffered a crushing defeat. Syracuse only had two wins coming into South Bend and had a lame duck coach who was out of a job at the end of the season. The Orange were supposed to be the perfect tune up as Notre Dame looked to beat Southern Cal for the first time in six tries. But the luck of the Irish was missing last Saturday.
The strange day started when Notre Dame fans threw snowballs at their own players. Perhaps this oddity played on the Irish player’s minds as they played a lackluster game and allowed Syracuse to come from behind to claim their third victory of the season 24-23. The loss was Notre Dame’s second straight at home and completed quite a strange and disappointing season.
The loss to Syracuse was especially disappointing because the Irish thought that game would have been their seventh win of the season, virtually ensuring the team a bowl berth. However if they do not come up with a monumental upset against the Trojans, who rarely lose at home, Notre Dame will be 6-6 with a recent home loss to Syracuse on their resume.
USC (9-1, 7-1) does not have about whether they will go bowling, but they will have to wonder where they will go. USC is ranked fifth in the BCS and would need quite a bit of help to get closer to the championship game. USC should certainly end the season 11-1 with Notre Dame and UCLA the team’s final two opponents and may be offered an at-large bid into the BCS, especially if Oregon State beats Oregon and goes to the Rose Bowl by virtue of their victory over the Trojans on September 25.
Since that loss to the Beavers, the Trojans have quietly reeled off seven straight victories. USC has utterly dominated their opponents and have won those seven games by an incredible average of 33.6 points.
The Irish last beat the Trojans in the Coliseum in 2000.
