Two eras start Thursday night, one more noteworthy than the other. When the Broncos travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns, it will make the first of a series of Thursday night NFL games that will continue through the end of the regular season. It will also mark the beginning of the Brady Quinn era in Cleveland.
Quinn starred at Notre Dame and is a local boy who the Browns gave up their first round draft pick this spring to draft him late in the first round in the 2007 Draft. During last seasons preseason, it appeared that Quinn would have a chance to start because then starter Charley Frye and second stinger Derrick Anderson looked horrible. In their first game of the regular season, both quarterbacks played poorly and Frye was sent packing to Seattle and Anderson was named the new starter, however most people believed it would not be long until Quinn saw the field. But Anderson had the year of his career, taking Cleveland to a 10-6 record to just miss the playoffs and earned a berth on the AFC Pro Bowl squad. So it looked like Cleveland could possibly trade Quinn because of the rise of Anderson, but this never came to pass. Anderson and the Cleveland Browns, after coming in with so much promise, have struggled and been inconsistent. This, along with a devastating home loss to Baltimore last week, prompted Browns Coach Romeo Crenell to make the change to Quinn.
Anderson has completed less than half of his passes (49.8%) and has thrown for only nine touchdowns with seven interceptions. Anderson has taken every snap under center for Cleveland (3-5) this year and Quinn only had a short week of practice with the first team to prepare for Denver. It will remain to be seen if there is a rust factor involved with Quinn and how his timing with his receivers will be. One thing is for sure, Quinn will go up against the perfect defense to get his feet wet in the NFL.
The Broncos have also been very inconsistent this season largely because of their poor defense. Denver (4-4) was one of the surprise teams in the early part of the season when they started the season 3-0. The start gave hope to Broncos fans that they could actually win the AFC West with the struggles of San Diego and the horrendousness that is Kansas City and Oakland football these days. However a Week 4 loss to those Chiefs game Denver their first loss and they have been freefalling since then, losing four out of five and the last three in a row. During that streak, the Broncos have given up an average of 30.3 points, including a season high 41 points to the Patriots on October 20.
Cleveland won the last matchup 17-16 last year in Denver. That snapped the Browns three game losing streak to the Denver Broncos that dated back to 2000.
