New York Giants vs. Carolina Panthers

Article Posted by: Roger   December 24, 2009 - 1:05 pm

Win or lose when the evening dawns, the New York Giants will have played their last game at Giants Stadium, but they still have a lot to play for as they battle for their playoff lives when they face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon from East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Giants (8-6) are hanging on by a thread in the playoff chase and are the last remaining NFC team not currently holding a playoff spot that has a shot at winning one, but they need to win their final two games, at home against the Carolina Panthers (6-8) and their regular season finale next week in Minnesota.

They would also need both the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers to lose at least once in their final two games, but they still have little shot at claiming the division, and if they get in, would likely be the sixth seed, who will definitely not have a home playoff game, thus ending their 34-year history at the stadium bearing their name.

The Jets will finish up the stadium’s football history next Sunday.

New York seems to be getting hot, averaging 38 points per game over the past three contests, but it might be too late to save their chance at heading to a fifth consecutive playoff berth. They decimated the Washington Redskins in their building, 45-12, on Monday night football, handed the Cowboys a 31-24 loss three weeks previous and played the red-hot Philadelphia Eagles better than anyone has in a month when they fell 45-38 on December 13.

The Carolina Panthers are trying to be spoilers as they have officially been eliminated from the playoff chase and they held true to form last week by blasting the Minnesota Vikings, at home, on Monday night, winning 26-7.

Backup quarterback Matt Moore, starting his third game for the injured Jake Delhomme, was one yard short of his first career 300-yard passing game and racked up three touchdowns while Jonathan Stewart rumbled for 109 yards and a score.

Carolina’s defense came up big, sacking Brett Favre four times and forcing two turnovers in the game.

The teams last met on December 21, 2008 when New York topped Carolina 34-28 at Giants Stadium to clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs, though that would not last as in what will likely be the final playoff game played at the Meadowlands, the New York Giants lost to the Eagles in the Divisional Round.

The Giants have called the stadium home since 1976 after playing their home games mostly at the old Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium. The Jets became the second team to play in the stadium in 1984 and both teams will move to a new $1.6 billion stadium starting next season.
