Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens

Article Posted by: Roger   November 27, 2009 - 10:16 am

Meeting for the first time this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens are not meeting for the honor of being the best team in the AFC North as was expected and as was the case in last years three meetings, but the bitter rivals will leave it all on the field just like they always have.

The Steelers (6-4) met the Ravens (5-5) three thrilling times during their Super Bowl season, each one with something significant on the line. Their meeting on December 14 clinched the AFC North for Pittsburgh and their third meeting of the season was in the AFC Championship game, which of course determined the AFC participant in the Super Bowl.

Yet the two teams meet under different circumstances this time around when they meet at M&T Stadium Sunday night. The rivals are in a deep hole, behind the surprising Cincinnati Bengals in the division and each team has already been swept by the Bengals.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in second place, trailing the Bengals by a game, but by basis of being swept it is a virtual two-game lead since if the teams are tied in the standings, Cincinnati would earn the tie-breaker.

The Ravens are in even worse shape, two games behind Cincinnati which is in essence a three game lead.

Each team comes in scuffling as the Steelers may have been the victims of the biggest upset in the NFL this season when they went to Kansas City and left with a 27-24 overtime loss to the lowly Chiefs, giving the defending champions their second straight loss.

Meanwhile the Ravens’ hot 3-0 start now seems a distant memory as they have lost four times in their last six games during a brutal schedule that has included close losses to Indianapolis, Minnesota, New England, Cincinnati and another, 10-point, loss to the Bengals. All of those teams are division leaders.

But the Steelers may have the biggest problems of the two teams as they may be starting Dennis Dixon at quarterback, usually the third-stringer who has thrown one pass in his NFL career.

Ben Roethlisberger went down when he was kneed in the head by Kansas City’s Derrick Johnson and was taken out of the game due to a concussion. His replacement in the game, veteran Charlie Batch also got injured and is out for at least six weeks with a broken wrist.

Roethlisberger is expected to go pending his passing of some post-concussion tests.

The Ravens have dropped four of the last five in the series after winning three straight.
