San Diego Chargers vs Kansas City Chiefs
This was supposed to be the hole that they dug to deep. They would not be digging themselves out of this one—or would they.
When the Denver Broncos were off to their shocking start of 6-0, people really started believing in them when they knocked off the San Diego Chargers, in their house, to get to that 6-0 perch. The Broncos won that game quite easily, 34-23 and were solidly in front of the Chargers (7-3) by three games.
Of course those three games were the same deficit in which they trailed the Broncos by last year and Denver could not put them away and it was Déjà vu all over again as the Chargers have not lost a game since then and the Broncos have not won one since then, including last week in which San Diego crushed their division rivals 32-3.
Going for six straight seemed like a sure thing over the patsy Kansas City Chiefs (3-7) until they did something the Chargers were unable to do this year, beat the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers figured to roll over the hapless Chiefs, but they kept it close through the entire game and forced overtime before kicking a field goal to claim one of the more stunning upsets of this NFL season, 27-24 last week in Kansas City.
The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to snap a four-game losing streak to their division rivals, including a 37-7 home loss on October 25.
As the Chargers have transitioned from a running team, the team’s usual potent duo of LaDanaian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles have not amassed 1000 yards between them yet, quarterback Phillip Rivers has flourished by throwing more. Rivers has passed for 2621 yards with 17 touchdowns and six interceptions and was brilliant against the Chiefs in Week 7, throwing for 268 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Meanwhile Kansas City’s signal caller has had a much larger learning curve. Matt Cassel was acquired in an offseason deal with the New England Patriots and he has struggled at times, but may have had his best game as a Chief, throwing for 248 yards with two touchdowns an no interceptions.
Cassel will need to improve on his performance greatly from the last game with San Diego if Kansas City hopes for a second straight upset. He was 10 of 25 for 97 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in the loss at Arrowhead earlier this year.
