Thrashers star Kovalchuk out for 2 games

Atlanta’s Ilya Kovalchuk, who has 38 goals and 26 assists this season, will will miss Friday's game against Buffalo and Saturday's game in Washington with a knee injury.

General Manager and head coach Don Waddell added that Kovalchuk will have a precautionary MRI on his knee and likely won't miss substantial time.

Kovalchuk suffered the injury in the second period of Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins and sat out the third period.

Just three minutes into the second period, he was checked along the side boards by Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu. The Penguins' left wing went knee-on-knee with Kovalchuk, sending him to the ice in pain.

Atlanta is in a dogfight for the No. 8 playoff seed and can’t afford a lengthy absence from its star.
