When the Red Wings lose lately, it is truly a news story since it does not happen very often. In their last game out, Detroit dropped a game to a team struggling to stay out of last place in their division, Dallas. Wednesday the Red Wings road trip will continue when they face another struggling team, the Anaheim Ducks.
Detroit (29-7-6) leads the Central and saw its six-game winning streak snapped when they had a defensive lapse. The Red Wings were outshot by the Stars 49-30, including allowing 23 shots in the second period. This is the most shots that Detroit has given up in a given period since November 2001.
The loss was the Wings first since losing in a shootout to Colorado on December 27th. Even with the loss, Detroit was still able to pick up a point by losing in overtime. Chris Osgood was left out to dry in goal against Dallas, but was still able to stop 44 shots. The Detroit Red Wings have not lost a regulation game since the day after Christmas, a 3-2 loss in Nashville.
Anaheim (22-17-5) has also had defensive lapses recently, by giving up three or more goals in three straight games. The Ducks were able to claim a 4-3 victory in their last game against New Jersey. Jean-Sebastien Giguere started in net for the Ducks and earned his first victory since December 14th.
On the offensive end, Anaheim was firing on all cylinders against the Devils. Chris Kunitz lit the lamp twice in the third period, moving his season total to 11. Corey Perry assisted on both of those goals in his return from a four-game suspension for a January 2nd altercation with Philadelphias Claude Giroux. The Ducks missed Perry during his absence, going 2-2-0.
The teams have split their two meeting this season with the Ducks winning the first at home, 5-4 in overtime on October 29th and the Red Wings claiming victory at the Joe Louis Arena 2-1 on December 1st.
