Earlier in the season, the Dallas Stars were able to knock the Red Wings off of their pedestal, if only for one game. The last time they played-well, not so much.
The Stars and the Red Wings will face each other for the second time in five days when Detroit heads to Dallas for a Monday night matchup. Earlier in the season, the Wings stumbled at American Airlines Arena, losing 3-1. But Thursday night it was a different story with Detroit winning easily on home ice 6-1.
Detroit (27-7-5) seeks to extend their winning streak to eight games, which will add to their season high. They have not been just beating opponents, but destroying them. The Wings have outscored their opponents 24-8 during their current 9-1-1 streak.
The Detroit Red Wings have been winning a lot on home ice recently, winning seven straight at the Joe Louis Arena, but will set out on their longest road trip of the season starting Monday. No problem there either, as the Red Wings are 13-4-3 away from Detroit. Detroit has trailed San Jose all season long, but is closing in and is four points behind the Western Conference leaders.
The Stars (17-17-6) were the Western Conference runners-up a season ago. They were beaten by Detroit in six games, but have not looked like the same team this year. Dallas will open a three-game homestand Monday night and come in after a disappointing 1-2-1 road trip after losing their last game in a shootout, 1-0 in Phoenix.
Dallas netminder, Marty Turco played well, but was not backed up on the offensive side. Turco made 28 saves in regulation and overtime, giving him his first shutout of the season, but he was only able to stop two of the five shooters in the shootout. The solid, but disappointing, game for Turco followed a horrendous one in Detroit, which saw the goalie being chased after allowing four goals in two periods against a team that torments him. Lifetime, Turco is 5-15-0 (and five ties), with a 2.88 goals-against average in 26 lifetime games, both regular and postseason.
Detroit has been rotating goalies when Chris Osgood has been healthy. If coach Mike Babcock follows this routine it will be Osgood who will start in net for Detroit. He fared much better than Turco on Thursday, making 22 saves. Osgood has fared well against Dallas in his last ten regular and postseason games against them, going 8-2-0 with a 1.61 GAA.
Detroit has alternated wins and losses at American Airlines Arena, but have won 12 of the last 17 matchups, including playoffs. The Red Wings won two of the three playoff games in Dallas last spring.
