Tug of war over Cristiano Ronaldo

Written by: Brainiac

Cristiano Ronaldo had a stellar opening match in the European Championships on Saturday, playing a big part in both of Portugal’s two goals in its 2-0 win over Turkey.

Still, what loomed over Ronaldo remained the tug of war over his future services between Premier League and Champions League winner Manchester United and Spanish giants Real Madrid.

"I'm not worrying about my future," Ronaldo said. "I'm playing in the Euro right now and after it's over I'll discuss the future. It's not affecting me now."

Ronaldo, 23, is adamant he is not letting the situation distract him from helping Portugal have a good tournament.

"I still don't know where I will play, I have not decided yet. I will talk after the European Championships," he said. "I have convinced myself that I cannot worry about this, so I am calm."

Man U’s Rio Ferdinand has urged his teammate to stay with United next season rather than transfer to Real Madrid.

"I want Ronny to stay and help us win more. We want to achieve things because we can. You can't stand still," Ferdinand said. "Right now United is the place to be. There is no better club in the world to play your football."

Ronaldo has said that he “would like to play” for Real, which prompted Ramón Calderón, the Spanish club’s president, to say that it was an honor to hear the star speak about his desire to move to Madrid. “For Madrid, it is an honor to know that a player like him thinks that playing at Real Madrid would be good,” Calderón said. “We are proud to know that he would like to be with us.”

Manchester United is expected to lodge an official complaint about Real Madrid with FIFA next week over the Spanish champions’ courting of Ronaldo. United threatened to report Real to the sport’s world governing body 10 days ago unless they abandoned their “totally unacceptable” pursuit of the forward.
