The Yankees agreed to sign Russell Branyan to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training Wednesday.

The move does not impact the teams chances of adding another lefty bat and they remain in the hunt for Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Raul Ibanez.

But Branyans presence could make things more difficult for Eric Chavez, since the 36-year-old can play both corner infield positions.

Emilio Bonifacio became the second player in a week to beat the Miami Marlins in arbitration.

Coming off a breakout season, Bonifacios camp successfully argued he deserved a $2.2 million salary this season instead of the $1.95 million the Marlins wanted to pay him.

The speedy Bonifacio, who in 2011 made $425,000, likely will open the campaign as the clubs starting center fielder.

Monday, starter Anibal Sanchez learned the three-person panel sided with him as well, awarding him $8 million instead of the clubs $6.9 million offer.

Hear ye, hear ye: The Pittsburgh Pirates are one team that actually might want to trade for New York Yankees right-hander A.J.

Burnett.

The Pirates clearly want another starting pitcher — they made one-year and three-year offers to Edwin Jackson before the free-agent right-hander signed with the Washington Nationals last week.

The Pirates also have spoken with the Yankees about Burnett, though those conversations failed to progress and perhaps qualified only as due diligence, major-league sources said.

Burnett, 35, wants to stay with the Yankees and be their fifth starter, according to a source with knowledge of his thinking.

But the Yankees have spent the entire offseason trying to move him, and might be even more motivated to complete a trade as spring training nears.

For the second consecutive year, the St.

Louis Cardinals will have a hand-picked group of prospects come to spring training early in order to mirror the major-league camp, mix with the major-league camp coaches and get a head start on their prep before minor-league camp opens.

Two of the Cardinals top three prospects, per the Baseball American rankings, have been invited to the pre-camp camp (still looking for a good name): righty Carlos Martinez and outfielder Oscar Taveras.

The other 22 minor-leaguers are a mix of recent additions, sleepers and players on the fringe of the prospect discussion who are about to show whether or not they belong in it.

The Cardinals early camp allows the minor-leaguers to come to the Jupiter, Fla., complex more than a week early and take part in workouts geared toward getting them individualized attention.

Two minor-league coaches are assigned to the camp, but many of the coaches from the majors and minor-league coaches from the major-league camp will spend time with the prospects.

The early camps workouts are held in the afternoon so that they dont conflict with the major-league time, and that allows for some unscheduled visits.

Last year, the early camp spent time with manager Tony La Russa, had a session about media requirements at the big-league level, and even a few of the major-league players.

Kyle McClellan recorded the first upset of spring training last weekend: He reached south Florida still a member of the Cardinals.

Actually, the drama had eased somewhat by then.

Reluctant to head south for fear of being traded as soon as he arrived at Roger Dean Stadium, McClellan received assurances from the Cardinals front office that he was safe — at least for now.

“This offseason was different,” McClellan said after a Tuesday morning workout at the teams spring training headquarters.

“Things have come up here and there.

Ultimately thats part of the business.

You cant control all that.

Theyre going to make the moves theyre going to make and you hope youre part of it.

But in this game its dangerous to start planning ahead.”

The Cardinals have a glut of power righthanded relievers.

McClellan is making $2.5 million, more than any of his bullpen brethren.

And the defending world champions harbored interest in free agent starter Roy Oswalt, whose acquisition likely would require a corresponding salary dump.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson has said this offseason that he would like general manager Mike Rizzo to keep an open mind when it comes to outfielder Bryce Harper making the 2012 Opening Day roster.

Johnson believes Harper, 19, can be the Opening Day right fielder if the team decides to move Jayson Werth to center field.

“But I think that the main thing is …

could he handle it mentally? And I think in his mind, hes already figuring to be starting on the club, if you ask him,” Johnson said recently about Harper.

“And I havent talked to him, but I know that hes done everything in his whole life to succeed at a higher level and compete with the best.

But I think [Harper is] pretty mature.

I dont look at him age-wise, as I probably should.”

We already know that new Orioles exeuctive vice president Dan Duquette has been looking to upgrade the teams on-base percentage when making moves this season.

And when Duquette explained Mondays trade of starter Jeremy Guthrie to Colorado for starter Jason Hammel and reliever Matt Lindstrom, he pointed to another key stat hes tried to focus his moves around: strikeout-to-walk ratio.

In acquiring Hammel and Lindstrom, Duquette said he was continuing to acquire pitchers with a strikeout-to-walk ratio close to 3-to-1.
