The fantasies recently shared over Twitter between Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and Miami Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall about a possible reunion surely sparked optimism about the clubs future at whats been an underachieving position in recent years.

But dont expect Chicago to make a move to land Marshall. That deal might be too difficult for the Bears to swing, but the team still plans this offseason to extend every effort to finally give Cutler — who will have only one year left on his contract after the upcoming season — the weapons he needs.

“I will say this: What is going to be targeted [are] good football players, producers, dynamic playmakers that can help this football team grow,” new general manager Phil Emery said. “[We want to] help the players that are here, and surround them with more weapons, more people that can make plays, and help this football team in its march towards championships.”

Considering the Bears leader in receptions — running back Matt Forte — doesnt play the receiver position, its quite clear thats where the team needs to upgrade with the “dynamic playmakers” that Emery discussed.

David Diehl saw Chris Snees sons Dylan and Cooper doing confetti angels on the field. He was asked about (twice) winning a Super Bowl even though many said it couldnt be done with him at left tackle. And he finally revealed he played most of this season with a broken hand.

The emotion of it all overcame the 6-foot-5, 319-pounder today.

“This is a team game and not only myself,” the nine-year Giants veteran said after the rally at MetLife Stadium, when asked about his hand. “Weve got tough guys on this team. Thats the thing. We talk about all in. Its not about yourself, its about the guys lining up next to you.”

His voice cracking and his eyes watering, Diehl added: “Im getting choked up. This is unbelievable.”

On Saturday, 49ers quarterback Alex Smith went on stage to accept the award for NFL Coach of the Year on behalf of Jim Harbaugh.

The two men played golf together on Tuesday at Pepple Beach as part of a five-hole 49ers vs. San Francisco Giants charity shootout. And on Thursday, Smith will serve as Harbaughs caddie on the first day of the AT&T National Pro-Am.

Smith is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but it appears highly unlikely that hell still be available to the other 31 teams in the league when the free-agent signing period opens March 13.

Harbaugh has made it clear he wants Smith re-signed, and he said Tuesday on “Chronicle Live” that the 49ers decision-makers are in agreement that Smith is needed back.

A St. Paul company won a $20.6 million contract to clean up the states largest Superfund site, land in Arden Hills that also is being considered as the potential home of a proposed $1.1 billion Minnesota Vikings stadium.

The Ramsey County Board, by a 4-3 vote Tuesday, approved the contract with Carl Bolander & Sons Co. for the cleanup of 430 acres, some of which could be used for a stadium, other unspecified development and a wildlife preserve.

Even though the board approved the contract, nothing will happen unless state money comes through and the contract returns to the board for another approval. In voting against the contract, some commissioners said the proposal was premature and could bind the county to action even without state money.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher has been open about his willingness to trade down from the No. 2 draft pick. Ditto for Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman when it comes to the No. 3 pick.

Any team willing to pay the heavy price to move up that high probably is doing so for only one reason: They need a quarterback. Badly.

Since neither the Rams nor the Vikings are going to draft a quarterback, teams looking to pick Heisman Trophy-winning QB Robert Griffin III should be dealing with the Vikings instead of the Rams. After all, why overpay at one store when the one next door can undercut the price?

A look at the draft value chart — the thing that Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson made famous when he was slapping the rest of the league silly in the 1990s — shows there is a considerable difference in point value between the No. 2 and No. 3 pick.

The busiest booth Tuesday at Mounds View High School on Minnesota caucus night may have had little to do with presidential politics — and everything to do with a new Minnesota Vikings stadium.

There, in the lobby of the high school in Arden Hills, volunteers were busy collecting signatures opposing having Ramsey County fund a new Vikings stadium unless it is approved by a citizens referendum.

The Vikings want to build a $1.1 billion stadium in Arden Hills and, although the team is now exploring building in Minneapolis, the Ramsey County location remains the teams preferred site.

“Republicans are signing 3 to 1 to the Democrats,” said a smiling William Krueger, the chair of the Senate District 50 DFLers, as he stood in the high schools main lobby.

Brian Daboll said the right things, leaned on his impressive set of influences, and introduced himself to Kansas City as an offensive coordinator whos confident and comfortable — and who might break from the pack and stay a while.

The Chiefs this week hired Daboll, who wasnt retained by Miami following the 2011 season, as their sixth coordinator in as many years. He spoke to reporters on a conference call Tuesday, saying that he would wait to make changes to the Chiefs offense. Daboll said that when, and if, he does, he hoped one word would be associated with the way he ran the teams scoring unit: attack.

“Were kind of working at that right now,” said Daboll, 36. “One of the most important things you can do as a coach is to really try to put your players in positions where they do things very ,very well. Until youre out there and watching them on the practice field … I think its your job to adjust the things you want to do and put them in the position that theyll serve best in.”

Titans General Manager Ruston Webster cant speculate on where quarterback Peyton Manning might wind up next season because Manning is still under contract with the Indianapolis Colts.

But in a conference call with Titans season-ticket holders on Tuesday, Webster didnt sound like a man whod be desperate to spring if Manning becomes a free agent next month.

He was quick to praise his current quarterbacks, veteran Matt Hasselbeck and 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker.

“Obviously (Manning) is a great player in the league,” Webster said. “But on the flip side of that, were excited about our quarterback situation.
