San Francisco 49ers: 33 Game Streak and Counting
By C.J. Sports on Nov 29, 2011

There has been a lot of talk about the San Francisco 49ers (9 - 2), including how things have turned around, Jim Harbaugh’s general performance, Alex Smith and his 180 degree about face, and the team’s defense.

The 49er’s defense is ranked number one in rushing, a number one status that I am shaky with for reasons which I'll go to in a second.

As they say, "fans will always be fans" and only see things through a biased point of view. I am here to state the facts and to bring some fans back down to earth...

The fact that they have not allowed a 100 yard rusher in 33 games is great, but let’s point out other factors that might have benefited the 49ers this season.

First of all, I think the schedule has played a major role for the team. Playing against weak teams, like that entire division, and injury laden franchises is one of the key factors for their streak. As a matter of fact, they are only on a 13 game streak of under 100 total rushing yards, but fans make it seem like they haven't allowed 100 yards in 33 games. But once again, what do fans know, other than what they want to know.

Let’s take a look of the teams they played and how they came to this streak:

The last 100 yard rusher was Green Bay’s Ryan Grant - 129 yards/6.1 YPC on 11-22-09

1. Jacksonville Jaguars - Jones-Drew 15 rushes/75 yards. 5.0 YPC, team had 86 yards (36 passes, 17 rushes) - 49ers won

2. Seattle Seahawks - really had no running game. Hasselbeck & Jones combined 24 rushes/98 yards 4.1 YPC (34 passes, 24 rushes) - Seattle won

3. Arizona Cardinals - Wells and Hightower split running roles. 17 rushes/ 82 yards. 4.8 YPC (29 passes, 17 rushes) - 49ers won

4. Philadelphia Eagles - Weaver and McCoy split roles. 26 rushes/100 yds. 3.8 YPC (36 passes, 26 rushes) - Eagles won

5. Detroit Lions - Morris and Johnson split role. 20 rushes/69 yards. 3.5 YPC. Both running backs sucked. (21 passes, 20 rushes) - 49ers won

6. St. Louis Rams - Jackson carried all but once. 20 rushes/ 63 yards. 3.2 YPC. As a team they were 21 rushes/ 76 yards. 3.6 YPC (20 passes/ 21 rushes) - 49ers won

7. Seattle Seahawks - Jones and Forsett split roles. 15 rushes/ 61 yards. 4.0 YPC. These two sucked, but good defense. (23 passes, 15 rushes) - Seahawks won

8. New Orleans Saints - a passing team!! Thomas and Bush split roles. 23 rushes/ 50 yards. 2.2 YPC. (38 passes, 23 rushes) - Saints won

9. Kansas City Chiefs - when talking about streak, they forget to mention this game. First truly good rush team on the list. Charles and Jones split role. 31 rushes/ 193 yards. 6.2 YPC. (27 passes, 31 rushes) - Chiefs won

10. Atlanta Falcons - another passing team. Turner and Snelling split role. 23 rushes/ 81 yards. 3.5 YPC. (43 passes/ 23 rushes) - Falcons won

11. Philadelphia Eagles - McCoy carries load, except three QB keepers. Combined they were 21 rushes/ 109 yards. 5.2 YPC (31 passes, 21 rushes) - Eagles won

12. Oakland Raiders - no McFadden. Bush and Murphy split roles. Combined 21 rushes/ 90 yards yards. 4.3 YPC (21 rushes, 21 passes) - 49ers won

13. Carolina Panthers - combination of this team sucking and the good defense. Williams and Stewart split roles. Combined the went 33 rushes/ 73 yards. 2.2 YPC (41 passes, 33 rushes) - 49ers won

14. Denver Broncos - absolutely no run. Moreno and Orton (QB) split role. Combined 14 rushes/ 58 yards. 4.1 YPC (40 passes, 14 rushes) - 49ers won

15. St. Louis Rams - Jackson and Amendola split roles. Combined they were 22 rushes/ 93 yards. 4.2 YPC (42 passing, 22 rushing) - 49ers won

16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Blount and Williams split roles. Combined they were 33 rushes/ 133 yards. 4.o YPC (20 passes, 33 rushes) - Bucs won

17. Arizona Cardinals - really? All pass, only six total rushes. Wells went 5 rushes/ 13 yards. 2.6 YPC (35 passes/ 6 rushes) - 49ers won

18. Green Bay Packers - Starks and Rodgers (QB) split roles. Combined they were 22 rushes/ 112 yards. 5.1 YPC (30 passes, 22 rushes) - Packers won

19. Seattle Seahawks - still using scrubs. Robinson and Lynch split roles. Combined they were 13 rushes/ 62 yards. 4.8 YPC (42 passes, 13 rushes) - 49ers won

20. San Diego Chargers - Tolbert and Matthews split roles. Combined they were 34 rushes/ 102 yards. 3.0 YPC (25 passes, 34 rushes) - Chargers won

21. St. Louis Rams - this team sucked. Jackson and Gibson split roles. Combined they were 26 rushes/ 63 yards. 2.4 YPC (37 passes, 26 rushes) - Rams won

22. Arizona Cardinals - no Wells, Hightower and Wright split roles. Combined they were 15 rushes/ 53 yards. 3.5 YPC (28 passes, 15 rushes) - 49ers won

23. Seattle Seahawks - this team is a joke. Lynch and Jackson split roles. Combined they were 17 rushes/ 46 yards. 2.7 yps (37 passes/ 17 rushes) - 49ers won

24. Dallas Cowboys - somebody mentioned Jones, really? He never was and never will be in Dallas. Jones and Murray split roles. Combined they were 15 rushes/ 46 yards. 3.0 YPC (33 passes, 15 rushes) - Cowboys won

25. Cincinnati Bengals - then they tried to throw Benson in the conversation, sorry, he is not a prime time back, Benson and Scott split roles. Combined they were 19 rushes/ 74 yards. 3.9 YPC (32 passes/19 rushes) - 49ers won

26. Philadelphia Eagles - then they tried to mention McCoy. This team was all about the pass. McCoy and Vick (QB) split roles. Combined they were 17 rushes/ 93 yards. 5.5 YPC (46 passes, 17 rushes) - 49ers won

27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Blount and Graham split roles. Combined they were 15 rushes/ 64 yards. 4.1 YPC (33 passes, 15 rushes) - 49ers won

28. Detroit Lions - haven't been a run team since B. Sanders. Best and Morris split roles. Combined they were 17 rushes/ 57 yards. 3.4 YPC (50 passes, 17 rushes) - 49ers won

29. Cleveland Browns - no Hillis, no run game! Ogbonnaya and McCoy (QB) split roles. Combined they were 19 rushes/ 67 yards. 3.5 YPC (34 passes, 19 rushes) - 49ers won

30. Washington Redskins - the dead skins? Helu and Beck (QB) split roles. Combined they were 14 rushes/ 50 yards. 3.6 YPC (47 passes, 14 rushes) - 49ers won

31. New York Giants - number one back out, Bradshaw. Jacobs and Ware split roles. Combined they were 27 rushes/ 89 yards. 3.3 YPC (40 passes, 27 rushes) - 49ers won

32. Arizona Cardinals - are you kidding? Wells and Taylor split roles. Combined they were 9 rushes/ 67 yards. 7.4 YPC (19 passes, 9 rushes) - 49ers won

33. Baltimore Ravens - good defense, but not great. Rice and Williams split roles. Combined they were 28 rushes/ 88 yards. 3.1 YPC (23 passes, 28 rushes) - Ravens won

This brings us to the current situation. The funny thing is, with all the facts in front of every one’s eyes, someone will still try to argue.  This is an open and shut case.  Facts are facts and this is why I am shaky.

- They have allowed many 100+ rushing yard games.  Their schedule has been very pass happy (441 passes to 197 rushes just this year alone).

- They play 6 games a year against division rivals, which happens to be one of the worst divisions in the league.

- They play a lot of teams that use a two back concept.  Their YPC is 3.5+.

So next time you want to start a discussion, at least bring some actual facts to the table.  This is Mr. C.J. Sports saying deuces to all you 49ers fans that still don't get it.
