NY Giants (9-7) at San Francisco 49ers (13-3)
Date/Time: NFL Football: Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 6:30 pm - Candlestick Park, San Francisco, CA
With the 2012 NFL Playoffs schedule finally down to the last four teams, Eli Manning and the New York Giants will head to San Francisco this weekend to clash against Frank Gore and the San Francisco 49ers in a game that will decide who will take the 2012 NFC Championship and gain a spot in the Super Bowl XLVI.
Both teams were able to surpass the general expectations and overcome underdog status to claim a spot in the 2012 NFC Championship Game. After a 7-7 start, the Giants achieved four straight wins and outscored their rivals 121-50. The Giants destroyed the Atlanta Falcons 24-2 in the wildcard round, and sealed their ticket to the 2012 NFC Championship with an unexpected 37-20 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the last game of the weekend.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco starred the most intense game of the post season last Saturday when the 49ers shattered the New Orleans Saints aspirations to play its second Super Bowl since 2010. Thanks to this victory, San Francisco is a slight favorite at home in the NFC Championship Game. Currently, the Niners 2.5 points favorites for next Sunday's match, which represents a major improvement for a team listed as a home underdog in its last game against the Saints.
The 49ers and Giants will meet this coming Sunday for the 2012 NFC Championship Game in the eighth postseason contest between the two teams. The 49ers hold the slight postseason edge with a 4-3 overall record and a 4-1 record in San Francisco. Previous matches include the 1994 divisional round when the 49ers dominated the Giants 44-3 and the 1987 divisional round with Giants blowing out the 49ers 49-3. More recently, the Giants met San Francisco during the 2011-2012 season, with the 49ers getting a 27-20 victory over New York.
