By San Francisco Chronicle, 11/04/11 - The Nashville Predators on Thursday made Pekka Rinne the second-highest-paid goalie in the NHL, signing the former eighth-round draft pick to a seven-year, $49 million contract extension, which runs through the 2018-19 season.

Rinne, who turned 29 on Thursday, was drafted 258th overall in 2004. He became Nashville's starter in 2008-09 and was second to Tim Thomas in Vezina Trophy (NHL's top goalie) voting and fourth in Hart Trophy (MVP) voting last season after posting a 2.12 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage.

Rinne stopped 35 shots and Patric Hornqvist scored in his fourth straight game to lift visiting Nashville. It was Rinne's third shutout of the season and 23rd in the NHL.

Oilers 3, Kings 0:

Nikolai Khabibulin outdueled Jonathan Quick in posting his second shutout of the season, and Lennart Petrell scored his first NHL scores goal to lead visiting Edmonton.

Rangers 2, Ducks 1:

Henrik Lundqvist allowed a game-tying goal in the second period by Bobby Ryan but stopped Ryan in the final round of a shootout to lift host New York.

Devils 4, Flyers 3:

David Clarkson tied the game 3-3 late in the third period as visiting New Jersey rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits and won in a shootout.

Wild 5, Canucks 1:

Matt Cullen had two goals and an assist and Josh Harding made 24 saves for host Minnesota.

Blackhawks 3, Panthers 2:

Corey Crawford made 41 saves through overtime then stopped all three shots in a shootout for visiting Chicago.

Maple Leafs 4, Blue Jackets 1:

Clarke MacArthur scored twice for visiting Toronto and goalie Ben Scrivens made 38 saves in his debut.
