On Del Rio’s Firing: What is the Blogosphere Saying?
By Inspin.com on Nov 29, 2011

By, Mario Miller – Inspin Insider Extraordinaire, November 29, 2011

Jack Del Rio has been canned by the Jacksonville Jaguars after going 3-8 this season. This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, being that his job was dependent on getting the team to the playoffs.

What is the reaction in the blogosphere?

It’s as much to be expected. There’s certainly no loss of love with the fans, who have been clamoring for years for Del Rio’s dismissal.

The story this season has been lackluster to say the least. Longtime starting quarterback David Garrard was brusquely cut by Del Rio days before the regular-season opener. First-round QB Blaine Gabbert was promoted after NFL Week 2 but has struggled and was benched on Sunday.

Adding to the discontent, Del Rio has been passing the buck blaming people on his staff for decisions he should be ultimately accountable for.

After a 14-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns, he went so far as throwing offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter under the bus. “Our offensive coordinator calls the plays,” Del Rio said. “I can’t speak to his thinking. You’ll have to get with him…”

The perception is that Del Rio has lost his drive.  He leaves with a 69-73 record, including going 1-2 in only two playoff appearances in his 9 year career with the Jags.

Who will replace him?

Owner Wayne Weaver will hold a conference at noon today announcing Del Rio’s replacement. In the meantime, defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will likely take over the head coach position.

The Jaguars host the San Diego Chargers for Monday Night Football in a game that fans don’t seem to be too interested in judging by the low sale of tickets to assist.

Regardless, whoever is leading the team for the remaining five games probably has nothing to lose in trying new things out. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to give the offense and Blaine Gabbert free reign to show their stuff.

It might even get the fans pumped up for next year…
