We are halfway through the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season. There have been some very interesting stories so far. Here are my top ten mid-season stories in the NFL.
10. Sack Record Chase
In the 2001 NFL season, New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan broke the single-season record with 22.5 sacks. Two players are leading the charge to break that record this season. Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen already has 13 sacks. Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware has 12.
9. No Defending New England?
Who thought we would ever see a Bill Belichick defense playing like this? They are dead last in yards allowed, giving up 416.3 yards per game. They are allowing more passing yards per game than any other team in the league.
8. Know the name DeMarco Murray
The rookie running back of the Dallas Cowboys has emerged as a top talent. On Sunday October 23, 2011, Murray exploded onto the scene with a team-record 253 rushing yards against the St. Louis Rams. He was not even the starter in that game.
7. NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year: Cam Newton
He should be. Newton broke passing records in his NFL debut. In his second game, Newton broke the rookie passing record for yardage by throwing for 432 yards against the Green Bay Packers.
6. Tebowmania
Guess what? Tim Tebow can play quarterback. The often criticized signal caller of the Denver Broncos has won two of his three starts this season. He has done it in dramatic fashion too.
5. The Detroit Lions
Just three seasons ago, the Lions became the worst team in NFL history when they went 0-16. Those days are over. At 6-2, the Lions have already matched their win total from last season.
4. The Buffalo Bills
This has been a turnaround season for the Bills. They had no wins at this point last season. They currently have five wins, including a stunning victory against the New England Patriots.
3. Manning-less Colts
Without quarterback Peyton Manning, the Indianapolis Colts have imploded. The Colts are the only winless team in the league. Their offense and defense rank among the worst in the NFL.
2. The Undefeated Green Bay Packers
The Packers are the only undefeated team in the NFL right now. Their remaining games are all winnable but Week 13 against the first-place New York Giants will be a tough challenge. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been godlike (129.1 quarterback rating, 24 touchdowns and 3 interceptions).
1. The Dream Team
The Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to be Super Bowl contenders. They made seemingly all the right moves in the offseason. But with a 3-5 record, they may miss the playoffs entirely.
