This weekend's UFC 143 event comes live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Nevada. While most fans of the UFC know that truly anything can happen in a fight, including a moneyline underdog pulling off the surprising (and not so surprising) upset. Here are three underdogs that I feel can put some serious cash in your pocket.
Dan Stittgen +190 over Stephen Thompson -250: Two relatively unknowns making their UFC debuts here. Thompson is a former professional kickboxer who held an impressive record of 56-0, with 39 of them coming via KO. He is 5-0 since switching over to MMA. Stittgen is a submission artist who sports a record of 7-1, with his only loss coming from the hands of current UFC fighter Justin Edwards. My lean is obviously on Stittgen if he can get the fight to the ground. I believe he is worth a play at +190 due to the fact that world-class kickboxers usually have mixed results in MMA competition (see Pat Barry, Gilbert Yvel, Mark Hunt, and many others).
Henry Martinez +300 over Matt Riddle -500: Riddle has lost two straight via unanimous decision and is essentially fighting for his job in this fight. He is fighting Martinez, who is similar in age and experience, and is making his UFC debut. The x-factor for me is Martinez is fighting out of Greg Jackson's camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jackson will have a great gameplan built up for Martinez to get the W and I believe he is worth at least a small play at +300 over the inconsistant Riddle.
Scott Jorgensen +175 over Renan Barao -225: This fight early on the main card of UFC 143 could very well earn "Fight of the Night" honors. Barao has won 27 straight fights, and made quick work of Brad Pickett in his last fight. Barao is an athletic, well rounded mixed martial artist who could knock you out with one punch, or submit you from any angle. His opponent Scott Jorgenson, has also been red-hot as of late, winning seven of his last eight fights, with the one loss being via unanimous decision to current 135 champ Dominick Cruz. Jorgensen boasts most of the same attributes as his opponent Barao, but the difference maker for me is Jorgensen has had more fights against tougher opponents, and should be well prepared to emerge victorious in this fight, and line himself up for another shot against Dominick Cruz.
