British puncher Michael "The Count" Bisping and veteran mixed martial artist, Chael Sonnen will clash in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis, set to take place this Saturday night at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
The event will feature a triple-header main card that also includes Phil Davis vs. Rashad Evans, Michael and Demian Maia fights Chris Weidman. The middleweight bout was officially announced a few weeks ago when Dana White reported that Mark Munoz was out of his bout with Sonnen due to an elbow injury and informed that Bisping was picked as Munoz replacement.
Since the bout was announced, many MMA betting experts have picked Sonnen vs. Bisping as the most interesting fight on the card, and the truth is that many fans have been waiting for this fight for quite some time.
Sonnen (27-11-1), a wrestling expert and silver medalist at the 2000 Greco-Roman World University Championship, has been looking for a title rematch since losing vs. Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship on August 7, 2010 at UFC 117. After a year of inactivity due a suspension related to an elevated testosterone ratio in his system, Sonnen made its comeback to the UFC on October 8, 2011 at UFC 136, with a victory over Brian Stann in the second round via arm triangle choke.
Former TUF contestant and team coach, Michael Bisping (23-3-0) has lost only three fights since his UFC debut (Rashad Evans at UFC 78, Dan Henderson at UFC 100 and Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110).
Since his reverse to Wanderlei Silva by unanimous decision, Bisping has been doing his best in order to get another shot for the title; winning four straight fights vs. Dan Miller at UFC 114, Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 120, Jorge Rivera at UFC 120, and Jason Miller at TUF 14. These victories launched Bisping among the top contenders for the UFC Middleweight. In fact, UFC president Dana White stated in an interview that if Bisping defeats Sonnen, he will likely face Anderson Silva for the title. Bisping, known for his trash talking outside the octagon, faced "disciplinary actions" and was fined after a post fight confrontation at the UFC 127, when he spat Jorge Riviera's corner and call him a loser.
This match will be mainly ground and grappling vs. striking. Sonnen is a natural wrestler, while Bisping pretty much relies on his boxing skills. If Bisping founds the way to stay on his feet and neutralize Sonnen’s ground attack, something that even Middleweight Champ Anderson Silva wasn’t able to do, then he may have the chance to land a submission or look for a technical knockout.
