UFC on Fox 2: Preliminary Card Best Bets
By Devon Miller on Jan 27, 2012

The UFC makes its return to Fox on Saturday, January 28th with a blistering fight card that has multiple title implications. While the undercard takes place on Fuel TV. Most casual MMA fans are unaware of a good majority of the fighters on the prelim card, but there is money to be made on these fights. Here are three fights I like for Saturday night's prelims.

Lavar Johnson +175 over Joey Beltran -225

This is one of those fights where you will not want to blink, as it could be over in a flash. Joey Beltran sports a 13-6 MMA record, and a 3-3 UFC record. He is coming off of a decision loss to prospect Stipe Miocic. Beltran loves to stand in the pocket and trade with his opponent, and is also known for his iron chin and lion's heart. His opponent, Lavar Johnson was the first heavyweight to move over from the Strikeforce banner, and will be making his UFC debut despite losing his last two fights in Strikeforce. In Johnson's twenty career fights, none of them have made it to the final bell. In his five careers losses, four of them have been via submission. While 14 of his 15 career wins have come either KO or TKO.  Both of these men love to stand and trade, but look for Johnson to get the edge over Beltran on the feet. If he can avoid being taken down by the much smaller Beltran, he should move on to a stoppage victory in his UFC debut.

Michael Johnson +200 over Shane Roller -260

Johnson is the Ultimate Fighter season 12 runner up who has gone 1-2 in the UFC. His last fight saw him get submitted in the first round by undefeated submission ace Paul Sass. Roller has also gone 1-2 in the UFC, with two losses in a row coming from the powerful hands of Melvin Guillard and a third round submission loss to TJ Grant. Roller seemed destined for UFC stardom when he moved over from the now-defunct WEC, where he was 6-2 under their banner. But he has surprised and disappointed in the octagon. Both of these men have a tremendous wrestling base, and I would say they are near equals in the standup department. Both men are looking at possibly being handed their walking papers from the UFC with a loss here. I believe Johnson is the quicker, more athletic fighter in this matchup, and I like him to pull off the upset here.

Mike Russow -155 over John-Olav Einemo +125

Mike Russow (14-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is coming off of an impressive performance over previously undefeated wrestler John Madsen, while John-Olav Einemo (6-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is coming off of a TKO loss to undersized heavyweight Dave "Pee Wee" Herman. Russow is known mostly by MMA fans as the human punching bag to Todd Duffee for two and a half rounds before coming out of nowhere with a devastating KO and one of the greatest comebacks in octagon memory. Russow has not lost a fight in nearly five years, and will be fighting in his hometown of Chicago, where he is a police officer. While Russow may not have the physique of a Brock Lesnar or a Shane Carwin, he has some very serious skills in all aspects of the fight game. Einemo was signed to be a warm up fight for the return of Shane Carwin at UFC 131, but Carwin had moved up in that card to fight Junior Dos Santos. Instead he found himself in a slugfest with Dave Herman that earned both men "fight of the night" honors. Einemo had previously not had a fight in nearly five years. The 6'6" juggernaut is one of the best in the heavyweight division at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and could pull off a submission from any angle. However, I love Russow in this fight, I think it will come down to having the hometown crowd behind him and his overall better attributes over Einemo. I see this fight ending in the first or second round via TKO, and hopefully Russow will get a huge step up in competition after this fight that he truly deserves.
