UFC on FX: Pat Barry vs. Christian Morecraft
By Devon Miller on Jan 18, 2012

Pat Barry vs. Christian Morecraft

The main card of the UFC's official debut on FX this Friday will begin with a battle of heavyweights as Pat Barry (6-4 MMA, 3-4 UFC) takes on Christian Morecraft (7-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC). Both men have lost two of their last three fights, and desperately need a win to avoid a pink slip from UFC brass. Barry is coming off of a submission loss to Dutch striker Stefan Struve, while Morecraft is coming off of a highlight-reel KO from Barry's former training partner, Matt Mitrione.

Pat Barry Overview: Barry is a former K-1 standout who has faltered a bit in his transition to mixed martial arts. While he boasts some of the best stand up game in the division, he has often struggled with larger, more ground based heavyweights. He has been working on this problem with the biggest heavyweight of them all, former Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, at his Deathclutch camp in Minnesota. If Barry can keep the distance and avoid the takedown from his larger counterpart, look for him to take advantage of his superior kickboxing and score a late first or early second round knockout.

Why Morecraft overview: Morecraft is better well-rounded fighter in this matchup, he holds a significant height and reach advantage over Barry and will look to utilize that. I doubt he will look to stand and trade on the feet against Barry, a world-class kick boxer. Look for Morecraft to try to get this fight to the ground and impose his size and strength on his much smaller opponent and look to score a first round ground stoppage.

My pick: I really like Barry in this matchup, his training with Team Deatchclutch should be the x-factor here. Look for him to show off much improved takedown defense and keep this fight standing. Barry will use his speed advantage to stay out of the pocket and pick his shots and dominate with counter punches, like his former training partner Mitrione utilized in his bout with Morecraft. I see the same result happening with an early second round KO for Pat Barry. While there is no line available on this fight yet, I like Pat Barry anywhere up to -230.
