Peyton Manning's future with the Indianapolis Colts has dominated the sports and NFL headlines in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a couple of rumors emerged regarding his future with Indianapolis. First, actor and Hollywood celebrity Rob Lowe, a big Colts’ fan and friend of Peyton Manning, posted a Twitter trend announcing his “imminent retirement”. The unconfirmed information was denied by several parties, including Manning's father, Archie, and Colts owner Jim Irsay, who fired back a few hours later and poked fun at Lowe’s rumors.
But the discussions around Manning’s possible retirement reemerged this week after Irsay told reporters Monday that he’s currently focused on hosting the coming Super Bowl XLVI and declined to make any comments about Manning’s future minutes before a news conference.
“I’m not going to talk about Peyton. When Peyton and I both talked, we got the focus on the Super Bowl this week. So we want to focus on Patriots-Giants and what it means to the city and all that sort of thing. I really don’t have anything more to add on Peyton right now.” commented Irsay, who recently performed an intensive team cleaning that included the firings of Colt’s General Manager Chris Polian and Coach Jim Caldwell.
Manning, 35, was forced to sit out for the entire 2011 season after enduring three neck surgeries in two years. Despite his injury, the team paid Manning $26 million last season even when he was not in shape to play a single game. Indianapolis finished the 2011 season as the worst performing team in the NFL (2-14), which automatically earns the Colts the No. 1 pick in the Draft. The Colts are now scheduled to renew Manning’s $28 million contract in March 8th, five days before the start of the league year, and six weeks before the NFL Draft. But now that Manning’s health and physical condition seem to be a major issue, and due the fact the Colts have the chance to pick Stanford QB Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, the team may have no choice but to let go of Manning.
With the winds of change blowing in Indianapolis, the question is: Will Manning be in condition to return for the 2012 season? And if he does, then where will Peyton Manning play next season? So far, several teams have expressed interest in getting Manning's services, including Miami, Arizona and the New York Jets.
