The Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Chargers are two teams in the AFC that seem to be headed in opposite directions. The Chargers were once considered a legitimate title contender, with Justin Herbert leading a stout offense into a promising future, but things have changed with Los Angeles losing three of their last four games.
As for the Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger and company have really started to turn things around after starting the season at 1-3. The storied franchise has won four out of their last five games and ended up in a tie with the Detroit Lions this past week.
Despite both teams heading in different directions, the Chargers are favored in this game. One of the main reasons for this is Roethlisberger’s uncertain status moving forward. Roethlisberger was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list last week and missed last week’s game as a result, but head coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t ruled out his starting quarterback for this week’s matchup against the Chargers.
Although Roethlisberger is not the same dominant quarterback of old, the veteran gunslinger being under center for the Steelers tilts the scales for Pittsburgh, especially with Chargers’ defensive end Joey Bosa and defensive tackle Jerry Tillery’s status being up in the air for the same reason.
Both teams come into this matchup looking to make a statement. The Steelers (5-3) want to prove they’re a playoff team, and the Chargers (5-4) aim to keep their title-contending hopes alive while gaining some ground in a tight race in the AFC West.
