UFC on FX: Preliminary Card Last Minute Best Bets
By Devon Miller on Jan 20, 2012

UFC on FX

Tonight's UFC on FX card airs live on FX, however, fight fans can tune in to the preliminary card live on Fuel TV at 6pm tonight. Most casual followers of Mixed Martial Arts are unaware of the fighters on the prelims, but there is money to be made on these fights just as much as the main card. Here are some plays I really like for tonight.

Khabib Nurmagomedov (+115) over Kamal Shalorus (-145)

Nurmagomedov is an intriguing prospect out of Russia who has an unblemished 16-0 record. Shalorus is 7-1-2 in his career, with three of those victories coming out of the now defunct WEC. The experience is clearly with Shalorus, who has faced much tougher competition in his career. But the 23 year old Nurmagomedov (try saying that three times fast) signed a six fight deal with the UFC, which is generally 2-3 fights more than a fighter usually signs for. Maybe Dana White and company see a future star in the making? We will see. But in the meantime, I will make a small play on the former Combat Sambo World Champion Nurmagomedov.

Daniel Roberts (+300) over Charlie Brenneman (-500)

I am not too sure why Brenneman is such a huge favorite in this fight. I believe it is mostly due to his massive upset victory over Rick Story last April. Brenneman was TKO'd in his last fight thanks to a well-timed head kick from Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, while Roberts has dropped his last two fights via unanimous decision from Claude Patrick and Rich Attonito. I like the value in Daniel Roberts at +300 simply due to the fact that he is fighting for his job. If he comes out with improved cardio, which hindered him tremendously in the Attonito fight, I give him a great chance at winning this one.

Jorge Rivera (+115)  over Eric Schafer (-145)

Schafer looks to bounce back after a decision loss to Aaron Simpson last October, he has lost his last 3 fights in the UFC. While the 39 year old Rivera has dropped his last two fights. This is a classic striker vs. grappler matchup. I believe Rivera will prevail with crisp boxing and takedown defense in this one. While both men are fighting for their jobs, Rivera is fighting for his fighting career, and I look for him to prevail.

On a side note, I just found out via Dana White's Twitter that Jorge Rivera is retiring win or lose tonight. I take that as another reason to pick him tonight, although some people might disagree with that.
