The Athletic recently released their yearly poll of active NBA players, and some of the results this year were particularly surprising.
Others weren’t, of course, such as future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer Gregg Popovich winning the poll for "coach aside from your own that you’d most like to play for."
With five titles under his belt and an entire choir of current and former professional players singing his praises, it certainly isn’t shocking that a multitude of hoopers would like to try their hand in Pop’s egalitarian system and "the beautiful game" offense.

One of the most eye-opening polls was the prompt asking for the player that was most overrated according to his colleagues.
Some of the results were to be expected. For example, Rudy Gobert garnered 5.6 percent of the votes, and after the trade package he brought to the Utah Jazz to send him to the Minnesota Timberwolves, in conjunction with the underwhelming season the T-Wolves have had compared to their preseason expectations, it’s a defensible take to say that he’s one of the more overrated stars in the league at this point in time.
Considering the fact that many pundits are already calling his arrival in Minnesota as the worst trade in NBA history, 5.6 percent is a little generous in comparison.
Some other notable players getting votes included Austin Reaves — who is currently enjoying the good half of the "LeBron James role player narrative arc" — Damian Lillard, who might land on an All-NBA team despite his Portland Trail Blazers falling short of the Play-In Tournament for the second season in a row, and Draymond Green, who is as notable off the court for his antics, as he is on the court for his two-way greatness.
The top five vote-getters were Gobert, Jimmy Butler, Pascal Siakam, Julius Randle, and Trae Young, who led all individual candidates with 14.8 percent of the ballots. Young is certainly a superstar in a star-studded league, but his newly found role as a playoff heel has probably contributed to his coronation as the NBA’s most overrated player.
That, coupled with the draft day trade that saw his Atlanta Hawks trade away the rights to Luka Doncic in order to acquire him, have straddled him with immense pressure and crushing expectations.
Trae Young may never live up to the hype that others have built around him and could win many more overrated awards in his career, but to be overrated, one must be praised to begin with, and he’s certainly deserving of most of it.
